The city of Akron is named after the Greek word, Acropolis. This word means "city at high point". Akron, Ohio is just 39 miles south of Lake Erie and sits along the Little Cuyahoga River. It is part of the Great Lakes region and has around 200,000 residents. Akron was first settled as a strategic point in 1825 and it later became known as a city of invention. If you want to stay in the area and are looking at hotels Akron has plenty from whichto choose. Hotels in the area often have free shuttle services to and from the airport along with indoor pools, state of the art fitness centers and continental breakfasts. You can enjoy your stay in the area in comfort when you find the right accommodations.

Akron is known for having a humid continental climate. This means that the inters are often cold and the springs are warm and wet. The summers are hot and humid and the fall is cool and dry. Rain and snow is distributed across the year, but there is generally a little more precipitation in the summer than the other months. The summer can bring intense thunderstorms and the winters bring colder temperatures, all of which is influenced by the nearby Lake Erie. When planning a trip to the area, you may want to take a closer look at the activities you wish to enjoy alongside the weather that normally occurs so you can choose the best time of year for your visit.

The architecture in Akron is quite diverse. The city was originally a canal town divided into two portions by the two canals in the area. You can see terracotta buildings next to structures formed in the neo-gothic style in the downtown area of the city. There is also brick and limestone, modern shopping centers and old-fashioned civic theaters. Because of the industry boom and the past merging of two towns into one, Akron has a little of everything.

The largest of the three performance halls in the city is the E.J. Thomas Hall. You can see regular performances by the Symphony Orchestra in this venue and there are also other music clubs and children's concerts available. The hall also has world-class events like ballets, comedies, lectures, Broadway musicals and other entertainment. The venue seats just under 3,000 people and over 400,000 viewers enjoy shows each year. The Civic Theater is located downtown and has a Moorish-style. This theater first opened in 1929 and featured elaborate woodcarvings alongside Europe antiques and alabaster statues. The theater was remodeled in 2001 but still holds a lot of its original charm.

Akron is home to the Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens, a notable country estate that sits on 70 acres. This home is number seven on the list of largest historic homes in the country. The house was built around 1912 for the founder of the Goodyear Tire Company and it holds a stone quarry style. The English garden was redesigned in 1929 by a landscape architect and a non-profit organization preserves its grandeur today. The home is now a historic museum that is open to the public seasonally. The country house has 65 rooms along with breathtaking views around the grounds.

The city is home to many professional sports teams including a Minor League baseball team, a national pro fast pitch team and even a roller derby team. The University of Akron also has NCAA teams in many different sports including basketball, soccer, baseball and more. If you are looking for sporting entertainment while you are in the area, there are plenty to enjoy.

Akron is also famous for its cuisine inventions. Ferdinand Schumacher has been credited with creating the first American oatmeal while he lived in Akron. He is considered to be the founder of breakfast cereal and he later started the General Mills American Oatmeal Company, which would later evolve into the Quaker Oats Company. The city also was home to the Menches Brothers who are sometimes credited with inventing waffle ice cream cones as well as caramel corn. Whatever type of food you enjoy, you can find a restaurant to match your tastes. Akron has local favorites, fine dining and plenty of international cuisine.

For those that are visiting Ohio for several days, there are plenty of hotels Akron can provide. You can look for a hotel with a convenient location to the attractions you want to see or you can choose a hotel that has spa services and other relaxing amenities. Whatever you need, hotels Akron presents have something to fit.
